Russia welcomes Saudi Arabia in Moscow in a first match from the World Cup 2018

The host of the tournament Russia welcomes Saudi Arabia in Moscow in a first match from the World Cup 2018. This game is going to be played at the Luzhniki Stadium in the Russian capital. Let’s have a look at it.

For a first time in the nation’s history, Russia will host a football competition from this calibre. The Russian government made a lot of effort to make this dream a reality, so we shall expect to see a well organized tournament. Let’s hope that we are going to see some good football as well.

Like every other time, the host of the World Cup will be in Group A of the competition and will also participate in the first game. Alongside Russia and Saudi Arabia, we can also see Uruguay and Egypt in this group.

Russia have the luck to start their participation in the competition against one of the weakest sides in it – Saudi Arabia. For the coach Stanislav Cherchesov this is a good opportunity to start in the tournament with a win. Russia’s main goal is to finish at one of the first two spots in the group and to qualify for the 1/8-finals. But it won’’t be easy. If we agree that Saudi Arabia are the underdog in this group, it’s a totally different case with Uruguay and Egypt. These two teams will also want to reach the knockout phase, so we shall expect to see them in a fight with the host for this.

Starting with a win against Saudi Arabia is a must for Russia from strategical point of view. Despite of being a little bit inconsistent in its efforts, the Russian team remains much better than Saudi Arabia’s. It’s true that the Russians didn’t impress at their last big tournament – the Euro 2016 in France, but now they will be extra motivated because of beign the host of the World Cup.

Being a host of the World Cup meant that Russia didn’t have to play in the qualification campaign. Just to stay active, the Russian team played a lot of friendly games in the last two years, while everyone else was playing in the qualifications. Russia faced some really good opponents like Belgium, Ivory Coast, Chile, Portugal and Mexico, preparing for the World Cup.

Looking at Russia’s results in the friendly games, we can conclude that lately things are not looking good for them. In their last six friendlies, Sbornaya are without a win – they made two draws (against Iran and Spain) and suffered four defeats (against Argentina, Brazil, France and Austria).

Russia played its last friendly game at May 30 against Austria in Innsbruck. Alessandro Schopf’s only goal in Igor Akinfeev’s net was enough for the home side to win. The Russian manager Stanislav Cherchesov gave a chance to almost everyone to play, but Sbornaya’s performance was not at the levels he desired. That’s for sure.

Saudi Arabia on the other hand qualified for the World Cup after finishing second in Group B in the Asian zone of the qualifications. Juan Antonio Pizzi’s team finished with just one point after the winner of the group Japan and on par with the third Australia, but having better stats. In this group Saudi Arabia won six of their ten matches, made one draw and suffered three defeats.

It’s clear that the Green Falcons are not among the favourites in this group, but they still need to be respected. Every team in the World Cup deserves respect.
