Portugal faces Spain in the big derby of Group B of the World Cup 2018

The European champion Portugal faces Spain in the big derby of Group B of the World Cup 2018. This game is going to be played at the Olimpiysky Stadion Fisch in Sochi. These are our soccer betting tips for today for this clash.

It’s clear that these two teams are the big favourites in this group. Most likely they will qualify for the 1/8-finals, but the big question is – who is going to win the group? If we agree that they won’t make a mistake against Morocco or Iran, the other two teams in the group, the result from this clash is going to be decisive for the first place. And winning the first place is absolutely important, because it would allow the winner of the group to (eventually) avoid someone else of the big teams in the tournament.

For Portugal this is a first big competition since winning the Euro 2016 in France two years ago. Few people really expected to see Selecao lifting the European cup, but Fernando Santos’ team showed a lot of discipline and spirit, winning the first major trophy in this nation’s history.

For Portugal this is going to be a 6th participation at a World Cup. The country’s best achievement is the third place won during the 1966 World Cup in England. In 2006 Portugal finished 4th, reaching the 1/2-finals for a second time.

Four years ago Selecao didn’t perform very good at the World Cup in Brazil. Portugal was underperforming in the competition and finished its participation in the group stages. Now they would want to do better, especially after winning the European Cup two years ago.

The winners from 2010 Spain will try to win the World Cup for a second time in their history. Just as Portugal, Spain didn’t perform well at the last World Cup in Brazil four years ago. La Roja travelled to South America with the status of a champion of the world, but Vicente del Bosque’s team was unable to pass the group stage.

Now many things in the Spanish team are different. After another bad tournament in 2016, Spain made some changes. Julen Lopetegui replaced the legendary Vicente del Bosque as a manager of the team. Lopetegui made some important changes, bringing fresh faces in the squad for the World Cup. Let’s see how this younger and hungrier team of Spain will perform in Russia. One thing is for sure – La Roja would want to do better after dissapointing performances during the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016.

In the qualification campaign both teams did well, winning their groups.

Portugal won the fight for the first place with Switzerland, winning Group B with 27 points. The Swiss team had the same amount of points in the end, but Portugal had the better stats, therefore – they won the group. In 10 games Fernando Santos’ team won 9 and lost only once – against Switzerland.

Spain on the other hand kept the tradition to be very strong in the qualification campaign. La Roja won Group G of the qualifiers with an almost perfect record – 28 points and 9 win and one draw from ten games played. Spain had to rival Italy for the first place in the group, but Julen Lopetegui’s team didn’t have any problems to outperform the Azurri.

These are our soccer betting tips for the World Cup 2018 game between Portugal and Spain. These two teams are the big favourites in Group B of the competition and most likely they will challenge for the first place in the group. This game shall be decisive for this.
